As an American, I’m pretty sure a severe enough economic collapse of the United States would likely result in the disintegration of the country at this point. Americans are currently living in worse economic conditions than in the Great Depression, adjusting for inflation. This means that if/when the US collapses economically, it will likely cause uprisings in the US, leading to America’s collapse as a nation state, leading to massive global social unrest: like it or not, the US has interests in most parts of the world. In addition, should the US collapse in the near-term, it would likely drastically accelerate if not cause the immediate collapse of China due to the very close economic ties the two countries share. Therefore, in order to be shielded from the economic/political collapse of the United States, at least one or more criteria must be met:
- As few economic or military ties as possible to the United States or China.
- Food-sufficient
- Relatively politically stable
- Isolation from surrounding countries that may be affected, whether by sea or geographical features
- Energy neutral or net energy exporter
This is a list that no country on Earth fully checks. Of the developed world, the EU member states may likely get off the best, as they largely export to the US due to strict tariffs. Even so, most countries would face economic turmoil. The safest in Europe would likely be, in no particular order:
- Ireland
- Norway
- Switzerland
- Russia, their current war notwithstanding
- Austria
- Iceland
Without American influence in Europe, it’s ultimately hard to say how the continent fares. Russia may see it as an opportunity to fulfill their geopolitical goal of controlling the Eurasian Steppe without American interference, which would likely lead to a brutal war in the mainland as many of the former NATO nations would scramble to defend themselves in the power vacuum that the US’s absence causes. Barring their largely terrible demographics, Europe might do on economically. The EU has several industrial economies suchs as Germany as well as several information centers, and if they get ahold of the energy they need they might be ok in the mid term.
Asia would be chaos. Avoid it at all costs. The only potential safe haven might be Japan, but beyond their economics taking a massive hit and their close military ties with the US, they are a rather anti-immigration country and would likely be reluctant to take in refugees.
The only other safe haven stable enough and remote enough to be New Zealand. Its nearest neighbor, Australia, is 1200 miles away, separated by an ocean, and while Australia would take a hit, New Zealand is almost entirely self sufficient. It also has a low crime rate and relatively low population, an extremely stable government, and would likely be open to helping American refugees how they could due to their close military alliance held with the US.
In reality, there’s only really five countries you’d want to flee to if shit hit the fan economically: Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, Iceland, and New Zealand. Icelandic is incredibly different to learn and is a very small population, making it the worst candidate. Switzerland requires a $200,000 investment, but in an economic collapse, they might not accept US currency.
The two best are Ireland and New Zealand: both are food self-sufficient, both are separated by sea (Northern Ireland notwithstanding, but they might rejoin Ireland when the US’s collapse leads to the UK’s collapse), both are largely politically and economically stable, and both are mostly shielded from exposure to the United States. If you can get to either of them, do it. If not, grab a gun and fight or bail into the wilderness. America is large enough that you can stay away from the cities and be safe.

Thank you for this infomation. When I read news about Ireland and Norway they are allowing migrants to rape and murder and the native Irish or Norse are prosecuted for defending themselves. As in the USA most people are anti white leftists, even many that claim to love their heritage…

Thanks for nice article . Personally, I wouldn’t choose New Zealand, because is sitting on the Ring of fire,to much exposed to earth quakes and Vulcan activities. Plus government was all into mass vaccination during Covid-19 , and most probably would again go fascist when is about pharma business. Regarding Ireland, and North hemisfere in general, Nuclear radiation from WWIII will be something that I would like to a void. Thinking about Australia, Easter side, as long is more than 600m above sea level.
