How To Protect Your Home From Invasion (When two people invaded my home in June 2018, my initial response was less than ideal.)

This article is from the perspective of a man who has personally experienced “A Home Invasion”

When two people invaded my home in June 2018, my initial response was less than ideal.

I heard them on my enclosed front porch. I heard thumping out there, and I was genuinely worried. However, I told myself that one of my pets was thumping around in his cage. I then heard a ping of something metal hitting the concrete floor out there. This time, I told myself that a mouse must have knocked something off a surface. I then heard the second one coming in the back. Again, I didn’t pay proper attention to the initial thumps. I then heard something that I knew was wrong. I thought that something was messing with a window air conditioner that I have between my living room and the back storage room that is not climate controlled. In hindsight, I might have been hearing this person trying to pick the lock on the door between the storage room and the kitchen. At this point, I knew something wasn’t right.

For a moment, I sat in denial. I didn’t want to get up and learn what I must learn. I then decided to act. I got to my feet. I was on my cane in my left hand but also had a push dagger in that hand. I hadn’t removed the sheath from the push dagger, but I had the knife. I had a kukri in my right hand.

As I approached the door, I saw a shadow move in the storage room. The top half of the door is mostly glass. I knew that the shadow was wrong and realized that I was seeing a person. I howled and moved towards the door. I could then see someone running away from me towards the door to the outside. I shouted “You’re going to f****** die” as the person ran.

I then went to my bedroom to get a revolver. I remember my phone being in my hand, but I don’t know whether it had been in the living room or the bedroom. I tried to dial 9–1–1. I would connect, but I couldn’t hear anyone. I tried about three times and couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

I came back to the living room and picked up my Bluetooth headset as I tried again. The problem had been that my headset was connected and everything was only going through the headset. As I picked up the headset, I could hear the dispatcher answering me. I mostly stood near the door between the living room and the enclosed porch where I could watch that door and the kitchen door. I waited twenty-five minutes until the sheriff’s people arrived.

I got through that situation, but that wasn’t ideal.

Since that time, I’ve made some improvements.

I don’t get good enough internet to use most of the modern alarm systems. However, I bought some motion detectors that chime when someone passes. I’ve put them on the enclosed front porch and in the back storage room. If someone came into those spaces today, I would have an alert. I’ve had a couple of false alarms, but the false alarms are better than being surprised.

I bought a couple of sirens that I can trigger using a fob. When I’ve had false alarms on the motion detectors, I’ve triggered the sirens. If I’d had the sirens that night, I might have been able to scare off the intruders quicker. I live in a rural area, so I can trigger these sirens without bothering anyone. Whenever I hear something too odd, I just trigger the sirens. Another nice thing about the sirens is that their noise would mask any movements that I was making.

I now carry a small gun around the house almost all the time.

If someone invades again, I’ll have more warning. I’ll have a way to try to scare the person away without any confrontation. That worked once by me howling and yelling, but there’s no guarantee that it would happen every time. If the intruder or intruders continue the invasion, I’ll shoot. I’ll probably still need to wait twenty minutes for official help, but at least I’ll have survived.

Question as asked at the time of my answer:

What would you do during a home invasion? How would you protect yourself?

  1. “I don’t get good enough internet to use most of the modern alarm systems.”

The internet is NOT required for an excellent alarm system. I’ve been in security for thirty years; I’ve used the internet on exactly ONE system.

A hard wired alarm system along with a hard wired surveillance system is what I have and what I recommend. When you add internet capability, you open yourself up to hackers. When you use wireless devices you open yourself up to hackers.
