EMP Apocalypses

This world idea came after I watched a hypothetical video about the effects of an EMP on America, so that’s half the inspiration here, the other half is from The Last of Us but the zombie apocalypse genre seemed a bit stale and needed to be spiced up a bit!

Setting: Late 1990s/early 2000s Massachusetts or New Hampshire area, November or early December

Here’s kinda my thought process for how the world devolves from a realistic standpoint, assuming things like: cars, electric fences, running water, household heating, electric stoves, ATMs, no longer work.

-First couple days: people realize stores aren’t being restocked, and all food and essential pharmacy resources are bought up or stolen. People stop going to work due to lack of electricity and stay home with their families.

-First week or Two: People, if they’re smart start leaving the cities, or hunkering down in their homes and boarding up windows, looting and chaos unfoldings in the streets and the rule of law looses potency. Deaths due to hypothermia are common. Household pets who lose the care of their owners have to fend for themselves.

-First Month: Humans survive in groups, gangs, or bigger, sometimes just families, valuable belongings are now, matches, lighters, preserved and canned food, water purification methods, wool blankets, ammo, first aid and pharmacy goods, electronics will be regarded as trash. At this point 90% of the population has died to dehydration, homicide, lack of food, and hypothermia especially now that winter has set in. Mice and other rodents go after what ever food has been discarded

-Three to six months: People take advantage of the weather turning warmer as the earth enters spring and summer. Termites begin to turn your home into their home. Folding may occur in certain areas due to snow melt and runoff or from pumps failing due to lack of maintenance. Gasoline will start to expired, leaving transportation to bicycles or on foot or perhaps horses. Houses begin to mold and erode from water damage. People will migrate to where ever fresh water and farmable land are and start to build communities. Skills of farming, hunting, fishing, bushcraft, cooking, medical treatment and perhaps carpentry would be highly sought after as well as books on the topics.

-Nine to Twelve months: Electrical fires, will cause forest fires from being unmaintained. Groups of survivors will have congregated in groups on old farms and homesteads away from cities if they know what’s best for them. These groups will need rely and trust each other for survival and will likely be small, just a couple families. The coming winter will likely cause water pipes to burst.

Questions, suggestions, comments and feedback are all welcome! Let me know how I did in this thought experiment

One thing I didn’t mention was how the military would have handled the loss of electricity thoughts on this would be appreciated as well!
