There is no place truly safe in that event. That said, some places will be safer than others.
You do not want to be in a city of any significant size. Once the immediate supplies of fuel, food, and clean water run out, starvation and disease will run rampant, and people will turn on each other.
At that point, those who are able will fan out from the cities looking for whatever resources they can scavenge, without regard to laws or morals. Hello, zombie apocalypse.
MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO- In Venezuela, electricity has turned into a rare and unpredictable commodity.
Criteria for a safer place would be:
- Well outside any major metro or suburban area, or any town larger than about 20,000. Ideally 100+ miles.
- At least a 2-day walk away from any major transportation corridor (interstate highway, etc) especially one that leads to a major metro. That’s 20–40 miles at minimum.
- A decent climate that won’t require you to expend a ton of energy keeping warm come wintertime, or roast you alive (or be too dry to grow food) in the summer.
- The problem is that these types of areas tend to already be heavily populated.
- Cascadia is one option, climate-wise but unless you get a fair ways up in the mountains, the population density is too high. Eastern Oregon tends to be full of Ruby Ridge types.
- If your bushcrafting is really up to par (and you don’t have any dependents), you could try bugging out to the Frank Church-River of No Return wilderness in Central Idaho. There are places up there with not even a logging road for a hundred miles, but the terrain is mountainous and semi-arid, winters are pretty hardcore, and there are wolves, grizzlies, cougars… but you wouldn’t have to worry much about other people.
In terms of resources, you want:
- At least 6 months of food and a clean water source (or the filtration needed to make it safe)
- Ideally the means to obtain or produce food without fossil fuel or electrical infrastructure
- Trapping and weir/net fishing are superior to hunting if you’re in a wild enough area. Hunting makes a lot of noise if you use firearms, and requires a lot more time and energy for the same output than trapping and fishing, and successful hunting with bow/sling/atlatl is a lot more challenging than you’d think.
- Gardening – you can actually produce quite a lot of nutrition in a small area with potatoes and a few greens, if the climate is suitable.
- Hand tools – awls, drills, garden tools (spade, hoe, rake, etc), axes and large saws for felling and processing trees, etc.
- Medical supplies and knowledge.
- Take the time to learn primitive medicine and wilderness first aid, the kind intended for when help isn’t coming.
- You’ll want some antibiotics with a long shelf life. Infection/sepsis is a huge risk when you can’t just pop down to urgent care in the morning.
- Bandages, antibiotic ointment, suture kits, common medicines, etc.
- Make sure you keep your vaccinations (especially tetanus) up to date now.
- Sturdy clothes, boots, work gloves. See above re: infection. Don’t take chances with “everyday” cuts and scrapes.
Have a backup plan, and the ability to leave your refuge on short notice. No static position is safe once discovered. There’s always a way for a determined or desperate attacker to get in or make it too expensive for you to stay. Even if it’s just a matter of dropping a molotov down your chimney…
If you can make it 6–12 months without being discovered and pillaged, experts have testified before Congress that something like 90% of the pre-EMP U.S. population will have died off (p. 5). With population density vastly lower, you’ve got a good shot at expanding into more favorable areas.

30 Million Americans Face Hunger As They Can’t Afford Insane Grocery Prices:Nearly 10 percent of the U.S. population is facing the threat of hunger and about 70 percent of Americans say they are struggling to pay their grocery bills right now.
