The founding fathers created the framework for the most free, most prosperous nation on earth because they understood Biblical theology. They embedded their understanding of theology into the institutions that govern the nation. For as long as the nation obeyed those charters it was free and prosperous. When the governors of America began to ignore those charters tyranny and decline began to set in.
It would be simplistic to reduce the problems of America to just one theological concept, and if America were to grasp that theology once again all of her problems would be solved. However, there is one major doctrine that has not only been lost by the nation, but by the church as well. One Gallup Poll showed that 77% of Evangelical Christians believe that man is basically good. A right understanding of the nature of man will not transform the American government into a Utopia, but it would set government back onto the right track.
The idea that man is basically good is a doctrine of Humanism, not Christianity. The Bible teaches that no man is good (Rom. 3:10, 23). Even when man thinks he is doing good, unless it is God working through him, the good that he does is evil; “…all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags…” (Is. 64:6). These and many other passages clearly demonstrate that man is basically evil. If men are basically good you can trust good men in government to formulate policy that will accomplish good for the people. If men are basically evil you will never trust evil men in government with unbridled authority.
This is precisely what the founding fathers believed when they established a government that was severely limited in its authority. They knew that government could only be populated by evil men. Evil men need government to keep them honest, or to punish men when they violate God’s law. That is why God established government in the first place. What instrument will govern the governors? The founders used the Constitution.
The Constitution was set in place to protect the citizen from these evil men in government. They were not allowed to deprive citizens of life, liberty or property, unless one was being punished for his crime. When evil leaders are no longer governed by the Constitution they can allow murder (abortion), deprive citizens of their liberty (unbiblical regulation) and they can rob their own citizens (taxes to pay for anything beyond the justice system).
Unregenerate man will always attempt to use government to kill, steal, and destroy. Even when the church reemphasizes the doctrine of the total depravity of man, there will still be a war to limit government in this country. As long as most churchmen believe that men are basically good there will be no war. Americans will trust every problem to government, and they will wonder why conditions continue to worsen.
