Not only has the term “SHTF” (Sewage Hits The Fan) entered into the vernacular thanks to shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Doomsday Preppers,” but more people are actually discussing things like the possibility of an economic collapse and whether they should stockpile food.
Let’s take a look at the reasons that you should start a food stockpile, more commonly referred to as “Food Storage” for scenarios that are more likely than a zombie invasion…
The most likely scenario that would befall the United States in the near future is an economic collapse, as the debt and the worldwide financial crises just won’t seem to go away. An economic collapse could be one where we have another Great Depression like we experienced in the 1930’s or something so severe that a reordering of the dollar is needed.
In either case, the cost of food will be a huge problem. If we have hyperinflation, then putting food on the table will be very costly. If we “just” have another Great Depression, then wages will likely decrease for everyone and it will be equally difficult to afford food and other necessities.
Since we can see the handwriting on the wall now, with food costs rising faster than in decades and the economic fundamentals of our country at a low point, it goes without saying that food will be more affordable right now than it will be tomorrow.
Buying extra food now and letting it sit in our pantry will mean that, as an investment, it will easily outperform the money in a bank account earning 0.25% interest. That means that storing up extra non-perishable goods, which we know we are going to use anyway, is a no-brainer.
You don’t have to be a survivalist or a prepper to see that storing up extra food in your pantry makes a lot of sense purely from an economic standpoint. If you subscribe to the notion that the economic collapse we face will be far worse, then there is even more reason to stockpile food.
If the economic collapse we face is as bad as many experts predict, then food shortages and food riots are guaranteed to be in our future. In that case, the food you have stored up could save your life, as it will enable you to stay in the safety of your home while others are scrambling for the last cans of soup at the store when the news breaks.
So you can see that there are good reasons to stockpile food for an SHTF scenario like an economic collapse. The only questions is whether you will keep thinking about how you “really should do something” or whether you will act.

During a SHTF situation, pain could become an annoyance for some, but unbearable for others.
If doctors are scarce and medicine becomes even scarcer, this one little weed, found all over North America and similar to morphine, could be a saving grace.
