The traditional American philosophy is characterized by the concept of natural law and the rule of law, etc. That our social and political laws should reflect the natural laws of human nature. They’re based on the premise that self interest and competition are inherent attributes of human nature.
Our social and governmental systems are designed to channel these natural aspects of human nature into a more perfect union. It is designed with three main branches of government that are equal, so they could compete with each other and prevent any one branch from becoming oppressive.
At the same time the US government was being formed, Adam Smith published his famous book, The Wealth of Nations. I haven’t read that book, but I understand that it proposes that this philosophy of self interest and competition are natural and healthy. This post modern philosophy, that everything is subjective and self oriented was very popular at that time.
I believe that the Enlightenment philosophy of realism and essentialism are an accurate understanding of human nature and reality. Objective reality exists completely independent of anyone’s perception of it. I also agree with the existential principles of personal responsibility, self determination and free enterprise. They’re inherent attributes of human nature, that exist in harmony with an ecosystem that includes limitations upon the expression of that creative freedom inherent in human nature.
The American Revolution was a giant leap forward, relative to the rule of man, the aristocracy, nobility and feudalism that it revolutionized. The evidence of that is the dramatic transformation of the social and economic development of human civilization that has occurred since the American Revolution.
Then, in response to the World Wars of the 20th century, the United Nations and the Bretton Woods banking system was set up. The UN is based on the premise that human beings are cooperative, and strives to establish peace and justice for all people everywhere, with special emphasis on protecting the poorest, most disadvantaged of earth’s citizens.
The Bretton Woods banking system, setting up the World Bank and the IMF, etc., is based on the US dollar. It is now essentially bankrupt. The United Nations has recovered from the devastation of World War 2 and the wealth is distributed much more widely.
World business and government leaders are currently consulting, at the United Nations, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Economic Forum, etc., about how to replace that unipolar Bretton Woods system, with a more global social and economic development framework, and to achieve that transition as peacefully as possible.
The philosophical, social and economic development progress that we’ve made, between the American Revolution and the founding of the United Nations, is again dramatic. It is another giant leap forward in our understanding of human nature and civilization.
Human civilization is whatever we, the people of earth, make it. We are free agents, who are responsible and accountable for own actions. Civilized human human beings cooperate with each other based on the rule of law, rather than compete with each other for food and shelter like wild animals and that whole Darwinian struggle for survival of the fittest.
Of course, we do have those natural instincts that we’ve inherited from our animal heritage. However, we also have the rule of law, first revealed in our world’s religions and then reflected in the social and economic development of human nature and civilization.
The entire human race is one universal common wealth. The United Nations is our global federation of nations. I am very patriotic about the USA. I’ve studied its history and philosophy extensively, and consider the USA to be one of the greatest founding members of the United Nations. The American nation and people have done more to advance the cause of human rights than any other nation or people in history.
I just feel like the United Nations philosophy is superior to the USA philosophy, just like the USA philosophy is superior to the feudalism that it replaced. Teaching the American people the value of peace and cooperation with our global community is important and difficult. It is important because in order to have world peace, the American people have to agree to participate in our world community in a peaceful and respectful way.
It is going to be difficult because of the traditional American values, which are good values, of independence, self interest and competition are so ingrained in our American consciousness. Other nations are going to have to go through the same difficult process of giving up that tribal attitude of superiority. The rest of the world will not accept American hegemony, and rightly so. We’re not going to accept China being the Middle Kingdom either.
We’re all going to have to give up our provincial, tribal, racial and national sense of superiority. We can and will live in peace and harmony with each other and our natural habitat. We’re making tremendous progress. The whole world economy is booming. There is more wealth and prosperity, more widespread now, than ever before in the history of earth.
And we have a lot of progress to make. That’s why it is so important to educate the American people, and the world’s people, to unite. Unite the clans! Let us get together into this universal common wealth that our ancestors have created, and make it work. Let’s create a more perfect union, that includes all human beings everywhere.
